Being Present Matters: Once at Risk of Not Graduating, Esteban Graduated with Honors

By Communities In Schools | Sept. 23, 2024 Chronic Absenteeism Graduation

In a powerful new national public service campaign, "Being Present Matters," Communities In Schools® (CIS®) shines the light on the epidemic of chronic absenteeism and celebrates the bond between CIS of Southern Nevada Site Coordinator Marco Mercado and former student Esteban Montoya-Mendoza.

Esteban, once at risk of not graduating, graduated from Canyon Springs High School with a 3.5 GPA in 2024.

“If it wasn’t for CIS, I would not be walking that stage,” Esteban, 18, admitted. “School was never really my thing.”

Like many students, Esteban’s struggles extended beyond the classroom. He was experiencing a challenging home life and the pressures of balancing soccer, work, and personal issues. “I had to remove myself from a toxic environment,” he said.

That’s when Marco stepped in. Recognizing the impact of external factors on Esteban's academic performance, Marco had a heart-to-heart conversation with him, offering support and empathy. “I do my best to establish a relationship and rapport with students,” Marco explained. “I get to know their story.”

Marco’s commitment to building strong connections with his students, seeing them as future leaders, and providing consistent support was crucial in helping Esteban persevere.

Once they see they are capable of doing things, it gives me confirmation that I’m making an impact.

-Marco Mercado, CIS of Southern Nevada Site Coordinator

Thanks to this unwavering support, Esteban found the strength to show up for himself. Since graduating, he has been working hard to save for trade school, driven by his goal of becoming a certified electrician.
